Build Your Own Custom etnies
Seriously, my custom etnies helped me learn to be a better skater. I know it seems crazy when you think about it at first, but think about this.
Remember when you were younger the rush you would get when you bought a new pair of shoes? Especially if those shoes were pumps, had lights, air bubbles or some other rad feature that made you feel like Superman. I can remember that I did and know a lot of people that have talked about feeling like they could suddenly jump higher, were invincible or had somehow been endowed some special form of superhuman power. I would be happy for days showing off to everyone possible and bragging about my kicks.
These days, since almost every imaginable and unimaginable form of footwear has been invented, worn and beat to death, getting a new pair of kicks just isn’t as special as it used to be, mainly when you know that nearly 100 million other people have the exact same shoes. This is where custom etnies can make all the difference.
I’ve been through a lot of skate shoes and can still recall when most were mostly the same, so hanging with my boys would mean that we were wearing the same kicks. I decided to go all out and give the “Design Your Own” feature a chance and made my very first custom skate shoes. They were black and had the name “Loco” embroidered in white on the sides and believe me, they were so much better than those “make your own custom skate shoes by spray painting some old crappy canvas shoes that you find laying in the back of the garage” kind of shoes. Here’s why I am a stronger skater because of this. To make it clear, no, the custom etnies do not give physical powers that allow you to ollie higher, complete megaflips or travel through time (sorry to disappoint!), but what they did provide for me was improvement on a psychological level. Skating is totally about being yourself and it may sound weird, but when you feel in your element, that you are yourself and unique, you let your own style to flow through your skating. For me, this meant skating faster, smoother and most importantly, happily, with the knowledge that my new custom skate shoes were the only ones of this design in the neighborhood.
