Before early July 1967, a NZ Shop would only take pounds, identified by the £sd method, was the monetary system of NZ. Coins of the pound adhered to the dimension, weight, and composition of their Great British counterparts. The most important coins in usage were the 1/2d, 1d, three pence, sixpence, 1s, 2, and the 2s 6d.

First Coins

NZ shop decimalisation of the Kiwi pound happened on the 10th July ’67, when the Kiwi pound was superceeded by the Kiwi dollar at the rate of 1 pound equals 2 dollars (10 shillings equals a dollar). On the same afternoon, brnad new decimal coins were enforced to replace the outdated pound coins. The earliest coins of the Kiwi dollar were 1 cent, 2c, 5c, 10 cent, 20 cent, and 50c. The 1c, 2c, and 50c coins were brand new designs, with the1c & 2c minted out of bronze, and 50c out of cupronickel. The new 5c, 10c, & 20c were identical in dimension, weight, and amount as the previous, shilling, and florin coins. In fact, up until 1970, the 10 cents coin stilll had the extra legend “One Shilling” to assist the NZ shop keeper.

The other side embossing of all coins showed A. Machin’s portrayl of the Queen, with the legend ELIZABETH II NEW ZEALAND. The primary designs for the reverse sides of the coins implemented in 1967 were refused by the Royal Mint. Many more versions were produced, followed by a vibrant discussion by NZ shop owners. James Berry’s suggestions were finally approved for most of the NZ shop coins, however he was forced to resubmit his design for the 5c coin & Francis Shurrock’s attempt for the ten c coin.

Towards the end of the 1980s, the one cent and two cent were already of little value, and it was decided to remove these coins from circulation. The final coins of these values were minted for circulation in 1987, with collector coins being produced for 1988. The coins were gradually removed by the NZ shop owners, before finally being demonetised (no longer legal tender) on 1 May 1990, and the NZ shop could no longer accept these.
