The veil of shade: the new trend!

To preserve your privacy outside and to protect yourself from the sun, you have several alternatives: the installation of a parasol, an awning... The veil of shade is a modern and aesthetic solution that is currently being used in contemporary homes to give an original touch to the decoration.

Why turn to the sail of shade?

The veil of shade is a decorative element in its own right that will allow you to give a very varied atmosphere to your exterior by playing on styles and colors. Indeed, it is available in different models, materials and sizes to suit all needs to enhance your garden and terrace. Thanks to its versatility, it can be integrated into all decorations. The shade veil is infinitely customizable, you can harmonize it with different styles to give character to your exterior. Do you like to doze off outside? Take advantage of the good weather without getting sunburned by installing a shade veil. This equipment can filter out ultraviolet rays by up to 97%, guaranteeing you optimal protection even if you plan to stay outdoors for hours. What's more, it allows you to stay in the shade without cluttering up the space, and you can adjust it as needed. The shade veil also provides protection from the neighbors. Depending on where you plan to install it, you can enjoy a more intimate setting. It can replace other options such as a screen or awning. It is also a good way to enjoy a shady place outside and to protect yourself from the rain, as long as you choose resistant fabrics. If you position the shade cloth vertically, it can act as a wind breaker. In short, enjoy your moments with your family, couple or friends on your terrace without fear of rain or sunshine. It's a real privilege.

How to choose a shade cloth for your exterior?

The shade cloth is available with a surface from 5m2 to 30 m2. But if this size does not suit you, you can always order a model adapted to your exterior. Depending on your taste and the expected result, you can choose a triangular, rectangular, square, etc. size. Nevertheless, the triangle offers an original and more sophisticated design. On the other hand, the others are to be preferred for large spaces, because they will allow you to save more money and protect you from bad weather. For the colors, you can choose a model in accordance with the color of your walls, facades, openings or other decorative accessories in your garden or on your terrace. Otherwise, totally different colors are recommended for a contrasting effect. In this case, do not hesitate to combine several colors for a more aesthetic rendering. In any case, bright colors are very appreciated, since they bring a warm and exotic atmosphere. On the other hand, soft colors are perfect to give a cocooning tone. Be careful! The color will affect the filtration of the luminosity. In places with a lot of sunlight, a clear canvas can give a feeling of glare, which is not very pleasant. Nevertheless, darker tones are ideal for a cooler exterior.

Which fabric should I buy?

The quality of shade sails will depend mainly on the fabric, but also on the grammage. PVC is very fashionable, it is water-repellent, waterproof, resistant, flexible, anti-UV and easy to maintain. Acrylic is waterproof, anti-UV and very resistant, it can keep its original color for years. Polyethylene shade cloth is flexible, light, waterproof, strong and easy to maintain. Moreover, it allows air to pass through. Polyester provides high protection against light and weather and is easy to clean. You can choose between a fabric weighing between 140 g/m² and 340 g/m². The higher the weight, the stronger the fabric. There are also two categories of fabric. Permeable fabrics protect from the sun and allow air to pass through, ideal for creating a refreshing corner, whether it is an openwork or micro-perforated shade fleece. Waterproof or water-repellent canvases are equipped with fine and tight mesh to protect you from showers, sun and rain. However, they block the air, which can lead to a greenhouse effect. It is therefore better to install them high up and at an angle to avoid water pockets.

What type of installation is preferred?

Concerning the installation of shade sails to sublimate your exterior, you have three alternatives.  First, you can fix it between 2, 3 or 4 walls. In this case, you must drill holes to ensure the reliability of the installation. You can also lean one side of the shade against a wall, and the other side on poles. This solution is very popular, especially on the terrace. Finally, if you plan to install it in the middle of the garden, you can turn to a self-supporting structure, with which the sail will be fixed with 4 specific masts. In this last option, the possibilities are endless. Give free rein to your imagination to design a pleasant and stylish corner in your home. Moreover, pay close attention to the material of the support. Aluminium and wooden masts are more accessible, but they are not as resistant as stainless steel. Therefore, in windy regions and near the sea, it is strongly recommended to lean towards stainless steel models. But, whatever your choice, here again, you have to decide between :
  • an adjustable and fixed mast: ideal for hard floors;
  • or a guyed mast: which will be placed directly on the ground and will rest on a shroud.
In any case, for a wider choice, take a look at the sites specialized in the sale of shade sails. You will discover ranges for all budgets. If the model you need does not exist on the market, order a custom-made shade sail. The cost will be higher, but the result is worth it.

How to extend the life of a shade sail?

Before installation, determine the ideal location for the shade cloth and take into account the orientation and movement of the sun. Then, define the position of the fixing points and plan an angle of inclination to facilitate the evacuation of water. It is very important to check the solidity of the installation so as not to damage it or injure the occupants. The shade cloth can wear out quickly due to its high exposure to humidity, heat and UV rays. Adequate maintenance is therefore necessary to boost its longevity. Use a soft brush or a vacuum cleaner to remove any dust that may have become embedded in the shade cloth, so as not to damage it. If you notice stains, use a soft cloth and warm soapy water and rub gently. For the most stubborn stains, use a bristle brush instead. In some cases, the use of a specific cleaning product is often necessary. At the end, rinse with clear water and let air dry. Caution! Do not use aggressive chemical cleaners or high-pressure cleaners. Finally, in case of heavy rain, strong winds and during heavy snowfall, it is best to store the canvas. However, make sure it is dry before storing it in the closet.
